Hey Everybody!

I just wanted to let everybody know that I have decided to close the doors of Feast.

After seven years of business, it has come time to say good-bye. Most of you know that I am battling breast cancer for the second time. Although I am very positive that I will kick this disease again, it has been difficult for me to stay as focused on the business as I should be. For the first time in my life, I am going to put my health first.

In addition, our sales have suffered with this challenging economy. It has been a difficult year, not only [for] Feast, but for our customers as well. Although I have enjoyed seeing your friendly and supportive faces over the years, there just does not seem to be enough business to cover my expenses, much less make a profit. I appreciate the patronage that you have all given me. Most of you feel like family so this has been a very difficult decision. If it were not for all of you, I would not have been able to make it to seven years.

There are so many memories of fun and happy times with you all. Just seeing the contented looks on your faces when you are enjoying yourselves has made this project so rewarding. It makes me sad to think that this will be the end. And those that know me know how much I love to throw a good party, so, with luck, I will be starting a catering company and I can bring the best elements of Feast to future events for you. I was so fascinated by it, the gentleman gave it to me and it was his last piece.? "Oh wow!"? I was so excited.? I?took it and put it in my office.? The funny thing is, every time some one comes to my office, they would ask me what is that.? I?told them that it's a metal plate that turns into a car.? They would go, "Wow!"? Some would ask me why I didn't fold it up and make it into the car. Some would ask me not to touch it, but to leave it flat the way it is.? One time I took that blue flat plate out of the plastic bag and started to bend a section, which is the wheel, and I quickly put it back to the way it was.? It was so beautiful there in my office just the way it is.? I didn't want to mess it up. ?

Today, at the show, as I was walking around, I was looking for the people who gave me that beautiful blue plate.? Several guys told me that must be theirs because they make things like that.? Everyone is so nice at the show.? I was so lucky to have seen so many people in the field where my passion resides.? And just when I was about to leave, I came to one last table and there, I saw the picture of a blue car on the banner!!? That's it!? That's my car!? While telling the guy the story, he looked at me and said, "Yes!? I remember you!? Yes, that was my last one!"? He was so nice and asked for my business card and so he can send me another one.? He said he has them in his office.?

The camera's rear 3-inch LCD features 460k dots of resolution and supports touch input, just like the one found on the GF3. The display is fixed, which is makes it less useful than the tilting displays found on the Sony NEX series and the Olympus E-PL3. The fixed display limits you to using the camera at arm's length, like a point-and-shoot, when taking handheld shots. If eye-level shooting is what you're after you can add the optional DMW-LVF2 Electronic Viewfinder ($249.99), an LCD finder with a 1.44 million dot resolution.

The GX1 has almost as many physical control buttons as a D-SLR, which is a departure from the control interface found on the consumer-oriented GF3. The top of the camera houses a Mode dial, iA button, Shutter release, and a Movie Record button. On its rear you'll find a Control Wheel and buttons to adjust ISO, White Balance, and the Autofocus Area. There is also a Q. Menu button, which launches an overlay menu that allows you to change other shooting settings on the fly?either via the camera's physical buttons or via touch input.

Performance and Conclusions
The GX1 performs quite well in terms of speed. It can start up and grab a shot in 1.1 second, records only a 0.1 second shutter lag, and can rattle off photos with just 0.25 second between shots. Perhaps most impressively, when shooting JPGs, it can keep this 4 frame per second pace for about 62 photos before slowing down. This compares favorably to the Olympus E-PM1, one of the faster Micro Four Thirds that we've previously tested. That camera requires 1.2 seconds to boot and shoot and also manages to grab 4 frames per second. Its shutter lag is slightly longer at 0.2 second.

Sadly, the GX1 and included lens don't quite do as well in terms of pure image quality. I used Imatest to measure its sharpness at the wide, mid-range, and telephoto settings of its 14-42mm zoom lens. At 14mm the lens was only able to resolve 1,552 lines per picture height of sharpness?shy of the 1,800 lines that denotes a sharp photo. It did better at 28mm, recording 1,864 lines, but softened to 1,778 lines at 42mm. The more compact?and more expensive?power zoom version of the 14-42mm actually scored a bit lower in terms of sharpness. It netted 1,676 lines at 14mm, 1,670 lines at 28mm, and 1,485. Olympus also makes Micro Four Thirds cameras, and kit lens included with its latest generation models can grab more than 2,100 lines per picture height at 14mm.

I also ran tests on the GX1 to see how it will perform at higher ISO settings. Increasing a camera's ISO makes the sensor more sensitive to light, so you can manage to grab sharp photos in lower light, but image noise increases as you raise the sensitivity. Like other tested Micro Four Thirds cameras, the GX1 didn't perform spectacularly in this regard. Its images were able to keep image noise just under 1.5 percent through ISO 1600?but at the next setting, ISO 3200, noise shot up to over 2.2 percent. If you want to use the camera at its top ISO setting, 12800, be prepared for some extremely grainy photos?noise at that ISO makes up 3.3 percent of your photos. Some other mirrorless cameras with larger APS-C image sensors, like the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 and Samsung NX200, are able to grab clean images through ISO 6400.

The GX1's video recording capabilities are quite competent. It supports 1080p30 and 720p60 video recording using AVCHD, as well as 1080p30 and 720p30 in MP4 format. Regardless of the setting, video is crisp, smooth, and features very nice color. Audio is recorded with a built-in stereo microphone. It can autofocus while recording, although that sound can be heard on the soundtrack, as can the sound of the optional power zoom lens moving in and out. Unfortunately, there's no mic input jack, so you won't be able connect a better microphone to the camera. You can output video to an HDTV via mini HDMI, or connect the camera to your computer via a proprietary USB port. It supports standard SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards.

Demanding shooters should be happy with the amount of physical control options available on the GX1, but may feel a bit underwhelmed by the fixed rear LCD and lack of a built-in EVF. It is the only 16-megapixel Micro Four Thirds body that is currently on the market?the upcoming Olympus OM-D EM-5 ($999.99 body only) will match that resolution, but in a larger form factor with a built-in EVF. Unfortunately, the included 14-42mm lens doesn't quite keep up with the sensor in terms of sharpness, and the newer, more expensive power zoom version scores lower in this regard. If you've invested in the Micro Four Thirds system and already have some lenses or a dedicated flash, the GX1 is a capable, compact camera?and you can buy it without the kit lens and save $100. But if you are considering your first mirrorless camera and aren't looking for more advanced features like a hot shoe and a bountiful number of physical controls, you may find more value in one with a larger sensor like the Sony Alpha NEX-5N. That camera can do much better in low light and has an external viewfinder accessory available, just like the GX1.

UGA pinpoints important factors in workplace safety - Athens, GA ...

Each year in the U.S., about 6,000 workers die on the job, and millions are injured.

According to a recent University of Georgia study, authored by workplace safety depends on whether:

1. ???? workers think management emphasizes workplace safety; and
2. ???? business policies result in interference with family demands.

"We've known for some time that certain occupations are more dangerous than others due to a variety of physical and other hazards," said UGA professor Dave DeJoy. "But in the last 20 years, there has been growing evidence that management and organizational factors also play a critical role. That is, actions taken or not taken at the organizational level can either set the stage for injuries or help prevent them."

DeJoy coauthored the study? with Todd Smith, a recent graduate of the Health Promotion and Behavior doctoral program in the UGA College of Public Heallth.

They examined nine factors potentially affecting workplace safety: management-employee relations, participation, safety climate, work-family interference, job content, organizational effectiveness, advancement potential, resource adequacy and supervisor support.

"Most prior research on organizational factors has focused on single occupations or single organizations," says DeJoy. "There has been a clear need to examine these factors across a diverse array of occupations and employment circumstances."

A failure of management

In one of their more interesting findings, they determined that when a worker perceives his or her work environment as safe (as one where management emphasizes on-the-job safety), it can reduce injuries by as much 32 percent. Moreover, businesss that place minimal constraints on worker performance and that run in a smooth and effective manner can reduce injuries by 38 percent.

"Injury is a failure of management,? says DeJoy. ?Organizations who blame individuals for injuries do not create a positive safety climate."

Smith, too, emphasized the organizational factor in safety: "We can design the best safety controls, but they must be maintained, and that falls on management. Enacted policies and procedures?not formalized ones but those acted upon?define a climate of safety."

Home-workplace safety conflicts

The study also found that conflict between family and job demands can increase injuries by as much as 37 percent.

"We used to think work was one thing and family was another,? says DeJoy, ?but now there is a realization that work-life balance affects performance and productivity."

The results of the study were published online in January in a paper entitled up ?Occupational Injury in America: An analysis of risk factors using data from the General Social Survey (GSS)? and will appear in the March issue of the Journal of Safety Research.

Using the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Handheld, Manpack, Small Form Fit (HMS) two-channel networking radio (AN/PRC-155), General Dynamics C4 Systems recently completed the first demonstration of secure voice and data communications via the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite-communications waveform.

The demonstration used an AN/PRC-155 manpack radio running the MUOS waveform software to transmit encrypted voice through a MUOS-satellite simulator to the MUOS ground station equipment that will soon be deployed in Sicily.

MUOS is a military satellite communications system that will enable secure, mobile networked communications worldwide, in even the most-austere environments. Development of the MUOS waveform remains on track for completion in the third quarter of 2012. By year-end, the MUOS capability will be available on the AN/PRC-155 manpack radio, the first MUOS terminal that will be available to soldiers.

?As one of the demonstration participants, I was pleased to talk over the MUOS network using the PRC-155 radio as it will be equipped for soldiers. When fully deployed, the MUOS system will greatly increase much-needed tactical satellite capacity, in terms of both communications bandwidth and the numbers of users,? said Brigadier General Michael Williamson, Joint Program Executive Officer, Joint Tactical Radio System.

?This demonstration proved that the JTRS HMS PRC-155 two-channel radio is ready to provide the portable link necessary to put the power of MUOS into warfighters? hands,? said Chris Brady, vice president of Assured Communications for General Dynamics C4 Systems. ?General Dynamics developed the MUOS waveform using the PRC-155 manpack radio and it will be the first MUOS communications terminal used by soldiers. With two channels in one radio, a soldier can use one channel for line-of-sight SINCGARS and SRW waveforms, and bridge to the second channel using the MUOS satellite system for unprecedented, dedicated global communications reach.?

General Dynamics C4 Systems is the prime contractor of the JTRS HMS radio program, which includes the two-channel PRC-155 networking radio, the PRC-154 Rifleman Radio and several other small form fit networking radios. The JTRS HMS program stipulates that two qualified manufacturers compete for full-rate production contracts, enabling greater affordability for the government. General Dynamics and Thales Communications, Inc. will manufacture the PRC-154 Rifleman Radio. The PRC-155 will be manufactured by General Dynamics and Rockwell Collins.

New film shows African conflict through eyes of girl (omg!)

BERLIN (Reuters) - Canadian director Kim Nguyen looks at the traumatic life of a child soldier in an unspecified African conflict through a young girl's eyes in "War Witch," a harrowing film that nonetheless carries with it an element of hope.

The movie has its world premiere at the Berlin film festival on Friday, and is the last of 18 competition entries to screen. The annual cinema event, also known as the Berlinale, closes with an awards ceremony on Saturday.

Nguyen, who has been thinking about and working on the project for 10 years, said he had been told by a friend to film only what he knew.

"Through the course of writing this script, I don't know why, but I could relate tremendously with this girl," he told reporters after a screening where the film was warmly applauded.

"It's more about trying to talk about what you can feel rather than what you know."

War Witch was filmed in Democratic Republic of Congo and used a mixture of trained actors from Canada and Congolese newcomers, including the young female star Rachel Mwanza.

She plays Komona, a 12-year-old girl whose peaceful life in a village is shattered when rebels arrive, kill most of her neighbors, force her to shoot her own parents and leave with a dozen or so child recruits.

After surviving a jungle skirmish with government forces, Komona is elevated to status of "witch," meaning she is treated with respect by the rebels but is also chosen to be rebel leader Great Tiger's concubine.

All the while she is haunted by the ghosts of her parents, who beckon her to lay their souls to rest if she ever wants peace. She falls in love with an albino rebel called Magician, a relationship that brings temporary respite from her suffering.

Nguyen said he deliberately used non-conventional story-telling techniques such as the ghosts to reinforce the childish vision he wanted to create.

"I wanted to do this film as if I was a young child, a 14-year-old director who didn't know the politics.

"I wanted to try to project the film that's seen from the eyes of this character. I guess that the politics of it are filtered through a child's eyes. I didn't want this to be an education film."

There is humor amid the barbarity of killings, executions and slavery, as when Komona sends Magician on a quest to find a white rooster if he wants to marry her.

Laughed at for falling for the oldest trick in the book -- apparently there are no white roosters -- Magician nonetheless tracks one down, underlining a determination and heroism that marks him apart from the fighters around him.

Mwanza, from Kinshasa, told a press conference that she was abandoned by her parents as a child and taken in by her grandmother, who then also sent her on to the streets when she could no longer cope.

She appeared in a documentary film and gave the money she earned to her grandmother to pay for her education, but when it was used for other purposes she left for a refugee centre.

"It's a kind of miracle, if I can put it like that, that I was kept on after the first film," she said through an interpreter.

"Then I learned to read. I am very proud to be able to read now. I don't have a family any more, the people you see on each side of me are my family now."

Carmakers shift gears, embrace 'frenemies'

Few products have done more to transform the shape of the auto industry as the compact Toyota Prius, which routinely accounts for half of the worldwide sales of hybrid-electric vehicles. Yet when it came time to develop the maker?s new battery-electric vehicle, a lithium-ion-powered version of the RAV4 crossover, Toyota decided to go outside, tapping California-based start-up Tesla Motors for help.

It was a striking shift in strategy for a company that, ?in the past? liked to do things its own way,? acknowledges Yoshi Inaba, President and COO of Toyota Motors North America.? But no longer.? Over the last several years, Toyota has also formed a series of joint ventures with partners as diverse as BMW and Ford, Intel and Microsoft, and, hints Inaba, ?You will see more auto alliances? coming.

There was a time when manufacturers measured their strength by how much they could do alone.? Henry Ford?s vast assembly complex on suburban Detroit?s River Rouge was designed to take in raw materials like sand, iron ore and coal at one end and spew out finished automobiles at the other.

But these days, manufacturers like Toyota are paring back.? They?re turning to outside suppliers for parts they don?t need to produce in-house and, in many cases, are curtailing the basic research that once set brands apart, forming alliances with major universities instead.? But even more striking is how erstwhile competitors are now finding it critical to team up on projects where they can?t afford to go it alone.

While Toyota may be considered the world leader in conventional gas-electric hybrids, it has lagged behind when it comes to more advanced, lithium-based powertrain systems and is ?now playing a game of catch-up,? says Aaron Bragman, a senior analyst with IHS Automotive.? While Tesla is helping launch the RAV4-EV, later this year, Toyota is turning to Ford for help on hybrid trucks and BMW for assistance developing other advanced powertrain systems.

Of course, Toyota is by no means unique in shifting gears.? ?The fact is, nobody has all the resources they need anymore,? says David Cole, chairman-emeritus of the Center for Automotive Research, in Ann Arbor, MI.? ?So, the idea of collaborating to speed things up and reduce costs makes sense.?

These days, it?s difficult to find any manufacturer, large or small, that hasn?t formed at least one significant alliance with a potential competitor.? One of the more expansive partnerships pairs the Euro-Asian Renault-Nissan Alliance with Germany?s Daimler AG.? Three years ago, they agreed to cooperate on a series of modest projects, including the development of new powertrains and a platform they could share for their smallest products.? By splitting costs they hoped to find a way to staunch the losses on minicars like the Renault Twingo and Daimler?s Smart fortwo.

Since then, however, they have rapidly added a series of additional joint ventures:?

• Production of a new 4-cylinder engine at Nissan?s Decherd, TN engine plant will be used in both Infiniti and Mercedes products, including the next-generation C-Class sedan, which will go into production at the German maker?s Alabama assembly plant in 2014.?
• The next-generation Mercedes small car platform, dubbed MFA, will be used for products as diverse as the next A- and B-Class models as well as the new Infiniti Etherea.
• And as TheDetroitBureau.com recently reported, Mercedes is expected to set up a new assembly plant alongside one being built in Aguascalientes, Mexico by Nissan. It would produce a range of products for both makers.
  ?We probably haven?t seen as much change in our industry in decades as we have to face now,? explains Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche. So, ?By doing (things) together in certain areas we will get even stronger.?

While the recent wave of industry alliances involves virtually every aspect of automotive design, engineering and production, most makers are following the same strategy as Toyota, which is focused on three specific areas: manufacturing; high-tech hardware and software, everything from in-car infotainment systems to advanced safety technology; and advanced powertrains, especially those using batteries, hydrogen and other cutting-edge technologies.

When it comes to tomorrow?s engines and drivetrains, partnering is all but essential, contends CAR?s Cole. ?We don?t know who the winners and losers will be in terms of advanced powertrain technology.? But the costs are huge?so it just makes sense to work cooperatively.?

Not all partnerships work.? General Motors abandoned a series of alliances with Japanese makers Isuzu, Suzuki and Fuji ? the maker of Subaru products ? and was forced to pay $2 billion to exit another partnership with Fiat.? But it continues to seek out other joint ventures, nonetheless.

In many cases, makers limit their work to what?s referred to as ?pre-competitive? efforts, the very early development stage where they might come up with some basic hardware or software strategies and then move off to finish parts or components individually.? That was how a hybrid development project worked for General Motors, Chrysler, BMW and Daimler.? Eventually, each came up with a distinctly different system -- but collectively, they saved both time and money by pooling manpower and technical resources.

?Some of these projects would have been considered heretical a few years ago,? says Cole.? Today, they?re rapidly one of the norms of doing business.
